F1 2018 is real qu’on a dit.

2018 Haas F1 Team VF18 is real

Incorporating “VF” into the name of the car is a nod to the history of Haas Automation, the team’s title sponsor. The first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation was the VF-1 in 1988. The “V” stands for vertical, which is an industry standard designation for a vertical mill.

Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation, added “F1” to the name to unofficially designate it as the company’s “Very First One”.

“People see what we can do in Formula One and people believe Haas Automation can build world-class machine tools,”

“Being a Formula One participant brings a level of credibility that you just won’t get through traditional advertising.”

– Eugene Francis Haas, chairman of Haas F1 Team

“The biggest part of the car’s evolution was the addition of the halo. It took quite a bit of study by the aerodynamicists, but the designers had to work hard to modify the chassis so the halo could survive the mandated loads. The total minimum weight of the car increased because of the halo, and there’s a higher center of gravity simply because of the halo’s position. But, everyone is in the same boat.

“The regulations stayed pretty stable between 2017 and 2018, so the VF-18 is an evolution of our car from last year. It’s less about reinvention and more about refinement. You see elements we had from last year on the car this year.

“Our 2017 car was actually pretty good, but we didn’t always get the best out of it, and that’s what we aimed to change in 2018. We got the car as light as possible to carry more ballast. We were able to do a better job of putting the weight where we wanted it.”

“The livery is a little bit of a return to what we had on our first car, the VF-16,” Steiner added. “Its look is clean and precise, just like the machine tools made by Haas Automation.”

Haas F1 Team x JACK & JONES team up

JACK & JONES is not new to Formula One. The menswear brand’s longstanding commitment to current Haas F1 team driver Magnussen and former team sponsorships attest to that. The partnership with Haas F1 Team is a natural continuation of a strong company history within motorsports and Formula One in particular.

“We’re very proud to announce our new partnership with JACK & JONES. It’s a brand built on hard work and attention to detail that has grown very quickly and delivers a quality product. While we are still relatively new in Formula One, our objectives and work ethics are very similar to JACK & JONES. The recognition
JACK & JONES has in its marketplace is what we strive for in Formula One.”
– Guenther Steiner, Team Principal, Haas F1 Team

“The dedication and professionalism it takes to be in Formula One aligns with the values we apply in our everyday approach to denim and menswear. We strive to be the best, just like Haas F1 Team. That’s why we have supported Kevin Magnussen throughout his career and why we have decided to join Haas F1 Team this season.”

“At JACK & JONES, we’re as dedicated to denim as a Formula One driver is to their racing, and that’s why our new partnership with Haas F1 Team makes so much sense for our brand,”

“Just as Haas F1 Team pushes its cars, drivers and crewmen to extract maximum performance, we do the same with our denim to ensure quality and comfort.”

– Henning Nielsen, Head of E-Commerce & Marketing, JACK & JONES

Cependant,

The quantity of power unit components a driver may use during the season was reduced from four complete power units during the entire season in 2017 to a new system where each of the power unit components is considered separately. Therefore, in 2018, each driver will be permitted to use up to three each of internal combustion engines (ICE), heat motor generator units (MGU-H), and turbochargers (TC) ; and two each of the kinetic motor generator units (MGU-K), energy stores (ES), and control electronics (CE).

“It looks like everyone is going to be better,” said Haas of the 2018 grid. “We identified our weak spots and Guenther (Steiner, team principal) and I had a good heart-to-heart talk on that one in Mexico City, about what direction we were going to take and how we were going to improve.

“It’s no secret we use a lot of Ferrari equipment, so we’re using them as our baseline. We need to be within a half-second of the Ferraris in order for us to be competitive. We weren’t last year. I would say we were a second to a second-and-a-half slower than the Ferraris. Overall, we were maybe two seconds off the pole qualifiers, so we need to knock a second off that if we really want to be competitive.

“We’ve eliminated a lot of the variables where we knew we were weak, and we knew where we needed to focus. We need to be able to go to the majority of races and put the car down on the track and be fast. We’ve focused on what it’s going to take to get the cars to be consistent and to close that gap between the top cars.”

“Tyres are the toughest issue we have because you have to keep the tyres in a certain temperature range, but how you keep the tyres in that temperature range is how you handle your downforce and your drag and how you handle sliding the tyres,” he said.

“The tyres are very sensitive to downforce, overheating and sliding, but in order to get the tyres right you have to have the right chassis and the right aero. Without all of that working right, the cars become very difficult for the drivers and you can’t expect them to make up for a car that just doesn’t have the capability of holding the track.”

– Gene Haas
