Comme le préfigurait la monoplace utilisée lors d’une conférence de presse en décembre annonçant l’arrivé (et le retour) de la marque Alfa Romeo en F1, la voiture se pare de blanc et de rouge profond, agrémenté d’une touche de bleu marine en liseré.

Le retour d’Alfa Romeo ramène l’un des noms de la Formule 1, remontant aux débuts du Championnat du Monde, marquant le retour au champ de course du « Quadrifoglio », la plaque légendaire qui orne les voitures les plus puissantes d’Alfa Romeo depuis 1923. Ce symbole, qui apparaît sur le capot de la nouvelle Formule 1, a une histoire fascinante profondément ancrée dans le monde de la course. Le premier véhicule Alfa Romeo avec un trèfle à quatre feuilles était le « RL », conduit par Ugo Sivocci à la 15ème édition de la Targa Florio en 1923.

également apparu sur le P2 de Brilli Peri lorsqu’il a triomphé lors de la première course du Championnat du Monde à Monza en 1925 et a remporté le premier des cinq titres de champion du monde Alfa Romeo. Il réapparaît à nouveau en 1950 et 1951, lorsque Giuseppe « Nino » Farina et Juan Manuel Fangio conduisent l’Alfa Romeo 158 et 159 respectivement, connu sous le nom d' »Alfetta », au succès dans les deux premiers championnats du monde de Formule 1.

Et aujourd’hui, le symbole légendaire revient au plus haut niveau du sport automobile pour démontrer au monde entier la force et le succès continus de la philosophie d’Alfa Romeo.

Ouvrant une nouvelle ère au sein de l’écurie suisse, la nouvelle C37 est la première monoplace conçue à Hinwil sous l’impulsion du partenariat signé en fin d’année dernière avec Alfa Romeo.

Pour des raisons d’aérodynamisme, Sauber allonge également l’empattement de 120 millimètres, suivant ainsi la tendance de la concurrence. L’essieu avant avance. Ceci crée plus d’espace pour les composants aérodynamiques tels que les déflecteurs. Une voiture plus courte est plus agile. D’autre part, Sauber espère une plus grande stabilité à l’entrée de virage en raison de l’empattement plus long.

Visuellement, les entrées d’air latérales ont été grandement modifiées par rapport à sa grande soeur. On note l’apparition d’une petite ouverture au-dessus de l’entrée classique. L’emplacement de la boîte à air sur le capot moteur à été reculé et se trouve à présent derrière le montant central (supportant la caméra embarquée).

A l’extérieur, trois déflecteurs verticaux guident l’air autour du châssis. Le Halo a également été optimisé sur le plan aérodynamique. La barre de protection peinte en blanc a reçu une petite aile sur le côté supérieur. Même les rétroviseurs extérieurs ont été revêtus d’un habillage aérodynamique.

Le poids minimum passe de 728 à 733 kg. Cependant, en raison de l’intégration du halo et des exigences de sécurité renforcées pour le choc frontal seul, les voitures peuvent charger environ 15 kg.

La C37 a été construite sur la base d’une nouvelle philosophie automobile, axée sur le concept aérodynamique différent de celui de la Sauber C36-Ferrari. Le C37 est équipé de pièces aérodynamiques nouvelles et améliorées, en plus des modifications réglementaires pour 2018, telles que l’enlèvement de la nageoire de requin et des ailes en T.

À l’extérieur, quatre capots séparés collectent l’air pour refroidir le moteur Ferrari V6.

Moteur Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team C37

V6 90° 1’600 cc 15’000 rpm w/ +MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic) 120kW. Powered by Ferrari.

Le Power Unit Ferrari V6 est construit différemment du bloc Honda, a un concept d’échappement différent, nécessite une installation différente et un système de refroidissement différent. Il a fallu d’abord réaliser de nouvelles simulations CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) et ensuite adapter les modèles de soufflerie.

Le Motor Generator Unit -K récupère une partie de l’énergie cinétique perdue lorsque la voiture freine, et stocke de l’électricité dans la batterie. La puissance maximale en sortie du MGU-Kinetic est 120kW

Outre le moteur, les composants hybrides et la transmission, Sauber achète également l’essieu arrière de Ferrari.

Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team C37 IRL

Comme toutes les autres monoplaces du plateau, cette Alfa Romeo Sauber sera en piste dès lundi prochain à Barcelone, à l’occasion des essais hivernaux.

Pre-season testing will take place in Barcelona, Spain, in February and March (26th February – 1st March 2018 and 6th March – 9th March 2018). The first race weekend of the 2018 F1 season will take place in Melbourne, Australia (23th – 25th March 2018).
