Célébrant le 50ème anniversaire du film emblématique ‘Bullitt’ avec l’acteur pilote Steve McQueen, Ford présente une version Bullitt de sa Mustang lors de sa conférence au NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) 2018, à Detroit. Molly McQueen a joué le rôle de présenter la digne héritière de la hero-car de 1968. The Ford 2019 Mustang BULLITT est équipé d’un bloc moteur 5.0L V8 délivrant 475 horsepower.

Cette réputation est doublement née après qu’une Mustang de 1968 a joué un rôle magistral dans le film Bullitt et de la future célébrité de l’acteur (cf. Le Mans), et plus particulièrement dans une scène de poursuite qui a établi de nouveaux standards dans la réalisation de films. Cette séquence de près de 10 minutes a suivi McQueen dans sa Mustang à la poursuite de deux types roulant en Dodge Charger, dans les rues de San Francisco. The editing of the car chase by Frank P. Deux Mustang ont tourné dans le film Bullitt de 1968. L’une d’entre elle survit dans son état d’origine, préservée par le fils de celui qui l’acheta aux studios Warner en 1974. Il la présente à la petite fille de Steve McQueen, à l’occasion du lancement d’une série spéciale Ford Mustang Bullitt au Salon de Detroit 2018.
Robert Kiernan a légué à son fils, Sean, la Ford Mustang GT Fastback de 1968 acheté en 1974. Ce véhicule historique est accompagné d’une lettre des studios Warner attestant de son authenticité : cette Mustang est bien l’une des deux qui tourna dans le film Bullitt.
Au début de l’année 2017 cependant, un collectionneur trouva dans la ville de Baja, en Californie, la trace de l’exemplaire qui servit à toutes les scènes de saut, au sommet des rues de San Francisco. Cette voiture avait été envoyée dans une casse mais, contre toute attente, elle survit à ce jour…
Donc, il y a deux autos furent utilisées pour le tournage. La première, dont le numéro de châssis se termine par « 558 » servit de voiture de cascade ; elle fut donc largement modifiée et malmenée sur le plateau. La seconde, numéro « 559 », fut utilisée pour la plupart des autres plans. Et resta introuvable jusqu’à…

McQueen’s star may have dimmed by 1977, but he remained an icon, a rare actor loved by both genders. McQueen was also one of us, an aficionado and a racer, someone who understood the instinctual joy of automobiles and motorcycles and indulged in both. And with that ’68 Mustang, McQueen gave us a gift, one of the greatest car chases ever filmed, a duel with a Dodge Charger up, down, and around San Francisco. The Bullitt chase is coveted for the usual crashes and jumps, but it had something more: Unlike most cinematic chases that feature cars performing impossible feats, the one from Bullitt was every bit as exciting, but the driving was obviously real. Those who know cars knew. It’s 10 minutes of film nirvana. McQueen wanted the Bullitt Mustang back.
The timing could not have been better. Ford was preparing to launch a third Bullitt Edition Mustang at the Detroit auto show in early 2018, and what better way to secure mass attention than by debuting the car alongside the lost original? Ford was in.

We move to the engine bay. The V-8 doesn’t look like anything special. It was originally modified by Max Balchowsky, the same guy who opened Hollywood Motors and built the Old Yeller II race car plus several movie cars. Sean and his father had the engine rebuilt using as many original parts as they could. Before installing it, they had the engine tested, and it produced 315 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 400 pound-feet of torque at 3000. The air cleaner is not original; Sean says it was stolen by someone who broke into the Kentucky barn at some point. I see new screws holding the fenders to the frame and ask about them. “The original ones were junk,” Sean says, “but believe me, I tried to save them.”

Cette Mustang est le 21ème véhicule à avoir rejoint le registre américain dédié à ceux qui revêtent une importance historique pour le pays, ouvert en 2014. L’actuel propriétaire avait contacté Ford au début de ses travaux de restauration, et un accord fut conclu pour présenter l’auto au public avec sa descendante au salon de Detroit 2018.

Les choix de peinture extérieure sont limités au noir d’ombre et au vert Dark Highland classique – comme dans le film. D’autres caractéristiques qui rendent hommage à la voiture conduite par McQueen sont les subtils accents chromés autour de la calandre et des vitres avant et une calandre avant noire unique.

L’habitacle garni de cuir est orné d’accents verts uniques sur le tableau de bord, les panneaux de porte, la console centrale et de sièges RECARO. L’équipement comprend un volant en cuir et un combiné d’instruments LCD entièrement numérique de 12 pouces, identique en fonction à celui de la Mustang 2018, mais doté d’un écran de bienvenue Bullitt personnalisé. Le sélecteur de vitesse est équipé d’un bouton de changement de vitesses à bille blanche pour faire un clin d’œil à l’original.

La puissance moteur du V8 passe de 450 ch. à 475 ch. et a 570 Nm de couple, obtenu via un système d’aspiration à air ouvert et un collecteur d’admission de la Shelby GT350 et un calibrage du module de contrôle du groupe motopropulseur pour des performances optimales. La toute nouvelle Mustang Bullitt est équipée d’une boîte de vitesses manuelle.
Jantes en alliage de 19 pouces évoquent le dessin de celles des années 60, munis de freins Brembo peints en rouge.

Un système d’échappement à soupapes actives est de série avec de nouveaux embouts d’échappement Black NitroPlate, et réajusté pour donner à la voiture une griffe caractéristique.
