McLaren vient de présenter au Salon Geneva International Motor Show 2017, la toute nouvelle 720S et son inédité V8 Twin-Turbo 4.0L de 720 ch.

Chez McLaren, les gammes sont organisées en Sports Series (570S, 570GT), l’actuelle Super Series (650S, 675LT) et Ultimate Series (P1, P1 GTR). Avec la 720S, McLaren inaugure un deuxième chapitre significatif de son histoire automobile de série, récente commencé avec la MP4-12C en 2010. Le constructeur base à Woking ignaugure une nouvelle direction de style, très différenciée de la lignée 650S. A noter, le logo McLaren ‘red’ est passé au ‘carbon’, quelques minutes après la présentation de la nouvelle 720S et affiché partout sur les réseaux sociaux !
Next-gen McLaren Super Series
The new McLaren 720S makes its global debut today (March 7) at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, introducing the second-generation of McLaren’s Super Series and simultaneously raising previously accepted limits of performance in the supercar sector.

The unveiling of McLaren’s new supercar confirms both the 720S name and 720PS horsepower of the first model in the second-generation McLaren Super Series, details which have been teased online in recent months. The Surrey, England-based manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports and supercars, has issued a series of six press releases since January, each accompanied by an image or film containing a numerical reference – and it can now be revealed that 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 x 6 equals 720…
Moteur McLaren 720S
La 720S est naturellement construite autour du châssis monocoque en fibre de carbone qui lui apporte aussi une rigidité accentuée. Mais d’abord découvrons le tout nouveau V8 biturbo.
Le nouveau moteur M840T est un bloc de 4,0 litres à turbo à double entrée (twin-scroll), alimenté par 16 injecteurs. Succédant au superbe M838T, le bloc moteur se voit réalésé à 4 litres et gagne 200 cm3 supplémentaires, lui permet de donner 720 chevaux et un couple de 770 Nm.
Ce nouveau V8 biturbo de 4 litres développe 770Nm et 720 chevaux. En comparaison, le M838T V8 de 3.8L de la 650S développe 678 Nm à 6000 t/min et 650 ch à 7250 t/min. Il a été poussé à 700 Nm de 5500 à 6500 t/min et 675 chevaux à 7100 t/min sur la 675LT.
Placé en position centrale arrière, le V8 4.0L délivre 720 ch., les performances atteignent un niveau exceptionnel : 0 à 100 km/h en 2,9 secondes et 0 à 300 km/h en 21,4 secondes. McLaren promet une sonorité évocatrice, car très travaillée. Go to listen to video.
McLaren 720S – Sound
The beating heart of the 720S is a new and fearsomely powerful M840T engine with 720hp. Press the start button and the twin-turbo V8 comes alive with a potent growl that ignites your senses and focuses your mind. Bathed in vibrant red light, every part of this 4.0-litre unit is refined to maximise power, sharpen responses, and increase fuel efficiency.

Les turbocompresseurs à deux volutes et à inertie très faible, dont le nouveau moteur M840T est équipé, représentent bien la philosophie qui a caractérisé tout le parcours de développement de la nouvelle supercar de McLaren : progresser dans tous les domaines. En accélérant plus vite que les modèles précédents, ils réduisent le décalage et permettent une réponse d’accélération plus rapide.
Le poids annoncé est de 1283 kg (à sec), ce qui donne un rapport poids-puissance potentiel d’environ 1,78 kg/ch. Avec le plein, la 720S gagne 18 kg en moins que la 650S. Les performances annoncées sont véritablement performantes avec le 0-100 km/h en 2,8s,
le 0-200 km/h en 7,8s (0,1s de moins que la 675 LT)
le 200-0 km/h est annoncé en 117m, soit 4.6s.
Performance is truly astonishing: standstill to 100km/h (62mph) takes less than 3 seconds and just 5 seconds later the car has passed the 200km/h (124mph) mark on its way to a maximum speed of 341km/h (212mph). Braking is equally impressive, the new 720S coming to a halt from 200km/h (124mph) in just 4.6 seconds, covering 117m. Additionally, the extreme efficiency of the engine also goes beyond mere velocity: the new McLaren 720S delivers 10.7 litres/km combined fuel economy.
McLaren 720S – Engine
The new M840T engine powering the 720S continues the lineage of McLaren’s multiple-award-winning, twin-turbocharged V8 engine series. The 4.0-litre engine, which has 41 percent new part content compared to the 3.8-litre engine that continues to feature in the McLaren Sports Series, generates a maximum of 720hp and 770Nm of torque.

The ultra-low inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers fitted to the new M840T engine typify the engineering philosophy of advancement in every area, pursued throughout the development of McLaren’s new supercar. Spooling up more rapidly than previous designs, they deliver reduced turbo lag and quicker throttle response.
The new 4.0-litre engine signals its performance credentials with an exhaust sound achieved through a sophisticated balance of harmonics and delivering a ‘crescendo’ characteristic, according to engine rpm and load. A sports exhaust is optional for those who want still more aural excitement.
Owners will also be able to showcase the heart of their new car – in particular, the cast-aluminium air intake plenum with McLaren Speedmark logo on top of the new V8 engine – with engine bay illumination that operates on vehicle unlocking.

The new 720S is lighter, faster and even more dynamically capable than its McLaren 650S predecessor, with unparalleled levels of interior space and sophistication and a breadth and depth of abilities that will engage and exhilarate the driver. One glance at the 720S identifies it as a bold reinterpretation of McLaren’s design language; rooted in aerodynamic principles, the beautiful form has nothing superfluous about it: immediately and undeniably a McLaren, the new 720S is arguably the most distinctive and remarkable McLaren yet.
One of the key points in the design of the new Super Series is the absence of radiator intakes on the side of the car; this function is carried out instead by the unique ‘double-skin’ aerodynamic form of the dihedral doors, which channel air to the high-temperature radiators that cool the mid-mounted engine.

Les portières caractéristiques de McLaren redessinées englobent désormais une partie du toit de la 720S. La cinématique, (F1 road-car heritage style😉 d’ouverture des portes vers le haut et par-dessus la carrosserie, permet une montée à bord et une sortie plus rapide, tout en réduisant la largeur nécessaire à leur déploiement pour stationner dans un espace étroit.
The majestic opening of the doors is one of the most alluring design features of the 720S. Like a geometric work of art, the twin-hinged dihedral doors sweep forwards and up, to make entering and exiting effortless and elegant.
Inspiré de l’emblématique grand requin blanc, le design de la 720S présente une silhouette élégante et racée qui évoque la puissance pure. Ces courbes illustrent la nouvelle orientation des éléments de design de McLaren, qui privilégient toujours la beauté épurée, que la teinte soit White, Blakc ou bi-ton carrosserie Orange avec ensemble toit carbon.

L’affichage de conduite/pilotage est escamotable (!) se relève automatiquement pour accueillir le conducteur/pilote. Le combiné d’instruments pivote selon le mode de conduite choisi, n’affichant que les information essentielles une fois sur sa tranche. Les informations de conduite/pilotage, les réglages et les fonctions multimédias transitent tous par le nouveau système ‘McLaren Driver Information System’.
L’intérieur soigné combine cuir noble et aluminium. La finition Carbon Black Alcantara aux accents brillants évoque l’énergie et la puissance. Les nombreux détails en fibre de carbone qui agrémentent l’habitacle expriment un caractère axé sur la performance.
Des sièges intégré à la monocoque au chassis, il n’y a que de la fibre de carbone.
Châssis McLaren 720S
La McLaren 720S illustre parfaitement notre ambition de repousser sans cesse les limites du possible. Plus légère, plus robuste, plus rapide. Son architecture repose sur une structure en fibre de carbone, la MonoCage II. Déclinaison de la technologie inaugurée pour l’hypercar McLaren P1, la MonoCage II est une cellule de sécurité monobloc en fibre de carbone qui englobe la structure supérieure.
McLaren’s expertise in carbon fibre structures – every road car built by the British manufacturer since the McLaren F1 in 1993 has had a carbon fibre chassis – underpins the construction of the new 720S; the architecture of the car is based around a new carbon fibre ‘tub’ and upper structure, the McLaren Monocage II. This technology delivers extreme strength and rigidity in a lightweight structure and is the ideal base for any supercar. A range of aluminium alloys are also used extensively in the chassis, as well as for some body panels.
A new generation of McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control, new suspension and the established excellence of McLaren’s power-assisted, electro-hydraulic steering, all combine to deliver huge reserves of grip, balance and performance and an unmatched breadth of dynamic capabilities.
McLaren 720S – Monocage II
An innovation of the technology first seen in the McLaren P1 hypercar, the MonoCage II is a one-piece carbon fibre tub that now includes the roof. Unique to the supercar category, this high-strength, low-weight passenger cell provides unrivalled rigidity, resulting in thrilling driving dynamics and exceptional protection for you and your passenger. The MonoCage II, unique to the 720S, extends over the engine bay and includes wider door apertures that open into the roof.
